YAKIMA RIVER - WINTER FISHING - 11/17/16

Aside from the actual fishing, which can be fabulous, winter brings a new perspective to rivers.  The landscape is 'pared to the bone'.  The birds of prey are on the hunt.  The big horn sheep are wintering in the Lower Canyon after a long and arduous rutting season. The most patient fisher of all, the Blue heron, is present daily. Small herds of elk find refuge near the river bottom, especially from Ellensburg upstream. Rarely is the river crowded, in fact, never.

KLICKITAT AND YAKIMA REPORT 11/15/16

Gonna make this short and sweet....

Tough fishing on the Klick overall.... However some nice fish to be had!
Orin with a nice doe on his 50th!

The Yakima is in transition from the Fall hatches to the winter factor.  Regardless, the fishing has been worthy.

# 16-20 nymphs with a few bigger nymphs injected here and there
# 4-8 Streamers
# 16-18 Dry Flies

WINTER SWING CLINIC January 14th barring arctic conditions.

KLICKITAT RIVER REPORT 11/2/16

Some sweet fish to be caught on the Klickitat lately.  Remarkable creatures.  Lots of big water lately but we have been able to find quite a few biters through the big and dirty water.

Both nymph and swing tactics have been worthy.  The Yarn under the bobber has been key and sink tips based on depth and flow.

Clarity is ranging from 2-2.5 feet depending on time and zone.

KLICKITAT, YAKIMA & UPPER COLUMBIA REPORT 10/22/15

KLICKITAT

Reasonable steelhead fishing in the mud lately, believe it or not. Nymphing yarn and the like has been a good technique.  Lately, short casts and light tips for the swing has been the approach   Soft water has been the key. River is pushing hard.

YAKIMA RIVER

The river saw some fluctuations in color down low recently due to the mega rain.

Best tactics for us lately include....A well placed and delivered #4-8 streamer, #16-20 Beatis and attractor mayfly nymphs,  #16-18 Baetis rendition to risers,  #16 Purple Haze as a searcher, #8-10 October Caddis here and there!

Clarity chart is currently as follows
Upper Proper - 5 feet
Upper Flatlands - 6 feet
Upper Canyon - 5 feet
Farmlands 5-3 feet
Lower Canyon 2 1/2 feet

Classic Yakima Bow

UPPER COLUMBIA

Dry fly fishing has slowed quite a bit on the American Reach.  Swing tactics have been the game plan. Beautiful colors and rainbows......

Sink tip lengths and weight  based on depth and flow....

Morning coffee and gear at Black Bear

YAKIMA, KLICKITAT & UPPER COLUMBIA REPORTS 10/15/16

Per usual, a little late on posting! Watch for our new website to be launched shortly.  Pretty much the same content, just streamlined in a Word Press format.  The new site will be mobile friendly.

KLICKITAT river is currently 'outa shape'  The fishing/catching has been more unpredictable then years past, but recently the numbers have increased.  Looking forward to this upcoming few weeks after the water subsides from this current blowout. It appears we have 'a ways' to go until 'fishable' again.

UPPER COLUMBIA has been consistent this fall. We have just buttoned up the hatches at Black Bear Lodge.  We finished with a great group of people from Eddie Bauer .  Awesome time, good fishing, great gear for the outdoors.

YAKIMA The Yakima has basically stayed in shape through this deluge......It received a little bump in flows.

Clarity Chart
Upper Proper - 5 feet
Upper Flatlands - 6 feet
Upper Canyon - 5 feet
Farmlands - 3 to 2 feet
Lower Canyon - 1.5 feet

This season would be considered the Far and Fine of the Yakima.  From now until November 20  is when 'little' is generally better.  #16-22 BWO's, midges and the like.  A well place streamer is not a bad technique either.  However, aside from the cool little dry fly fishing it offers,  I would choose December over the next few months as my favorite. Good to great streamers on the move and with little two hander's.

YAKIMA - KLICKITAT - UPPER COLUMBIA REPORT SEPTEMBER 30, 2016

YAKIMA
Water is low and clear.  Water temps are 54 -61 depending on where you are in the system and at what time.  Those temps are little warmer than usual.  Should start to drop soon with cooler weather coming are way.

Bugs throughout the river
#10-12 Craneflies
#10 October Caddis
#16 Tan Caddis
#14-16 Yellow Mays
Salmon Spawn

The Lower Canyon fishing has been a little rough lately. Low and pressured.  Not giving up many fish.
The Farmlands, upper Canyon and Upper Flatlands have been a bit more predictable.  Egg drift, dry flies and streamers have all produced.

Schumacher party

KLICKITAT RIVER
Catching remains a bit unpredictable and is a direct relation to the number of fish over Bonneville which is at about 40 percent of the 10 year average.  Regardless we have seen some sweet steelhead over the past few weeks. In fact some rather large fish that have had their way.

The warmer weather colored up the river a bit, which was welcomed.   Clarity is now increasing daily. The river also received in influx of Chinook recently.

Bill Douglas Crew

UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER
Current bugs include...
#8-10 october Caddis
#16 Tan Caddis'
#12-8 Hoppers

Water level is currently higher then the 40 year average and has been jumping up and down a bit more then usual.

Fishing remains good and multiple techniques have been used to catch 'em. Dry flies, nymphs and streamers.

Guests on the water

KLICKITAT RIVER saw a recent insurgence of needed water to bring some fish in;  The catching has improved overall.  Fishing pressure is high seeing that the State/Feds have pretty much everything closed otherwise.

In addition to the Steelies, There are some Fall Chinook in the river. as seen below in the image and vid.  Techniques have ranged from skaters to beads and everything in between.   The upcoming week is traditionally a great Skating week.

YAKIMA / KLICKITAT / UPPER COLUMBIA REPORT 9/15/16

Major delay in reports....time flies.  This is a nuts a bolts report on the three watersheds. Typically my approach, anyways.

Yakima - Pretty good fishing.   Lots of fish lately, 10-15 inches with some bigger ones mixed in.  Cranelfies, October Caddis,   Little Tan Caddis, Cahills... Coming Soon, The Salmon Spawn

Classic Yakima Bow

Klickitat - Beautiful days, Tough fishing overall.   Don't let anyone tell you different.  Tactics used lately have included Skaters to beads. 5-6 feet of visibility.  Multiple techniques have produced....just not multiple times.  Tip of the day; Utilize the best technique for the water at hand.....

Kate and a Klickitat Steelhead

Upper Columbia - Avg  to Good fishing.  October Caddis, Hoppers, Fall May.  12 feet of visibility

Jim with a sweet UC Rainbow

KLICKITAT RIVER REPORT / THE STEELHEAD RANCH - 9/4/16

Reasonable to good fishing on both the bobber and swung fly considering the ho-hum numbers over Bonneville.  Water clarity is thumbs up with an average of about 4 ft.  Fishing pressure on the river is high.

In just a few words - Incredibly hard fish to land - Not a bad problem to have - As listed in the last report; multiple tactics have been used to fool the steelhead lately.

Drew with a sweet buck

YAKIMA RIVER REPORTS - 8/27/16

I have heard complaints about the high flows on the Yakima river during the summer; Granted it is not 'normal'  but it is a saving grace to the fish because the water temps would be 'over the top'  if we did not have the injections of water from the reservoir during our hot months.

....Water levels are dropping and the big dry fly fishing yesterday was GOOOD.    As the Flip Flop continues you will find fish throughout the river as opposed to hugging the banks as they have for the irrigation season. Tactics will change,  as the temps and weather will as well.

Hopefully we will see some reasonable Baetis hatches this fall!  We used to see great Cahills, Mahogany Duns and Baetis in the Fall.  This was back in the day....when there were only 3 guides on the river, not 2200. Last fall there seemed to be a slight resurgence of a reasonable Baetis hatch;  let's cross our fingers.

VIB's  over the  next 2 months
Summer Stones, Hoppers, Craneflies, October Caddis, Baetis, Hydropsyche Caddis

John Fogliani's Rainbow!

UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER - 8/24/16

Good to great fishing.  Dry flies, nymphs and swinging the fly  based on zone and timing.  The year of the mayfly...coined by Steve, Jeffe and jack.  Water temps 62-64.

Best swing bug - #8 Catch All
Best nymph - #14 Prince
Best dry fly #10 Atomic X

KLICKITAT RIVER REPORT 8/24/16

River is in Good condition and fishing well:  Both the swing and nymph are worthy.  Tips and dry lines. Classics and Intruders, Stones and Egg patterns....Pretty much the ticket!

Dan with a sweet wild one

YAKIMA RIVER REPORT

Little tougher lately.  Water temps have been 66-72 degrees lately depending on where you are in the system and time of the day.   Based on the Bureau of Reclamation gauge, which is admittedly not completely accurate.  Regardless,  a little warm.

Oxygenated waters have been key for nymphing...#12 and 14 Classics have been the ticket recently with the #8-10 Stone nymphs taking a third place.

Dry flies on hopper banks and in the last hour with Caddis.

There have been a lot of recreation floaters and cliff jumpers lately.....Stay clear of them or the may end up in your boat looking for a beer or falling from the sky.

Gary and Mackenzie!

YAKIMA RIVER REPORT - 8/10/16

Overall the Yakima has been pretty darn good.  Water temps have been ranging between 61 and 68 depending on time of day and stretch of river.

MVP's have been the Pats Stone, Streamers, Dave's hoppers, Small Chubbies and the select Caddis rendition in the evening in isolated locals.

KLICKITAT RIVER REPORT - 8/2/16

River Clarity today,  8/2/16, is significantly better then yesterday...... 10AM below town.

KLICKITAT RIVER REPORT - 8/2/16

Currently a little rough...... Image below was taken @ 5PM near the town of Klickitat o August 1.  Not much of a cycle lately.

YAKIMA RIVER REPORT - 7/29/16

The river is fish reasonable, considering the heat. Low light time frames are your best.....mornings and evenings. Water temps in the Upper River below the Cle Elum confluence are ranging from 59-63.  Water temps in the Lower Canyon are ranging from 62-68. 'Little warm' in the Lower Canyon.  Not a bad place to fish early in the day and get off mid afternoon.  Mr Weather shows reasonable weather coming our way with highs in the low to mid 80's and cool night time temps.

Summer Stoneflies, Caddis and Hoppers are the main fare.  As usual at this time of year, the Upper Canyon (East Cle Elum to Thorp) dinner plate can be a mixed bag of delights.....Ants, leaf hoppers, beetles, bees etc...

More to follow on the Upper Canyon menu in the next report.....

UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER REPORT - 7/24/16

Remarkable hatch season on the Upper Columbia this past 2 months.  Currently the fishing is limited to a very short window based on waning hatches and the heat.  We are looking forward to the Fall Season....should be fantastic.

As good friends,

2) CJ Emerson Senior Evening Hatch Guide
3) Rial Blaine Senior Evening Hatch
4) Steve Bird ( author of the Upper Columbia Fly fisher, Soft hackle Journal and an Evening Hatch Guide Staff member)
and myself would say....'2016 was the year of the Mayfly'

KLICKITAT RIVER REPORT - 7/24/16

Fishing has been great. Catching has been everything from nada to quite a few.  Typical steelheading and early season behavior, but overall, better then normal.  Currently the river is 'Steelhead Olive' but will most likely be grey brown manana and the ensuing days based on the heat pattern we are receiving...

A variety of approaches have caught fish....Everything from

1) Just under the surface with traditionals
2) 21/2 inches of flash and  T-10
3) Yarn
4) Stones
5) Beads

Our guess is the fishing with a fly over the next week will be non existent...

YAKIMA RIVER REPORT - 7/15/16

The Yakima is fishing average to great depending on the day.  Morning as of recently has been pretty darn good dry fly fishing.  This coincides with the fact that Summer Stones are starting and  they are nocturnal. Techniques have included a mixed bag if wanted;  Streamers , nymphing and dry flies have all produced.

Predominant bugs include....
Summer Stoneflies
Caddis
Terrestrials

The best of summer is just starting.  We are fortunate to have great water temps......Montana is in Hoot Owl conditions already;  We aren't even close!

KLICKITAT RIVER REPORT - 7/12/16

The river is in exceptional condition for this time of year.  Yesterday the clarity was 4 feet at Stinson @ 5PM. The canyon between Stinson and the Slide has one really tight spot and will be even more difficult when the water drops.  The issue is literally  3 corners down from the Stinson put in, which actually has a make shift ramp now after the access was demolished by high waters this winter.

There is also another issue between One lane and Leidl...Pictured below.  Overal the river has changed quite a bit from Leidl to Slide.....Kinda like the 'Hoh of the desert'.

Fishing has been goooood so far this season; again, some would say one of the best Junes' in a long while. Yesterday we managed to hook up 3 times on the swing.....Nothing on a dry line or light tip.....However 10 feet of T-11 and the Blue fox fly.produced.
Beautiful wild fish

Blockage between One Lane Bridge and Leidl

YAKIMA RIVER REPORT JULY 8, 2016

The powers that be released a bunch of water yesterday on the Yakima and the fishing is pretty tough right now.... Just saying! Will keep you updated.

KLICKITAT RIVER REPORT - JULY 5, 2016

There are definitely fish throughout the system..... GOOD  fishing this past month.  According to some, one of the best June's ever!   We have not been on it it a whole bunch this past month but we will be on it quite a bit from here on out .  Water levels are lower then normal;

Yesterday @ 11 AM the clarity was 2 feet in town.  The river is definitely cycling but we should see less of a cycle with the cooler weather.

UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER REPORT 7/3/16

Avg to great fishing depending on the day...The Upper Columbia is in a good cycle right now! #wordclasstroutrighthereinwashington

Drakes, PMD's, PED's, Caddis, Yellow Sallies

YAKIMA RIVER REPORT 7/2/16

Yakima river insects include....
Caddis -  #16 Tan - Hydropsyche
PMD's - #17 Yellow - Ephemerella
Yellow Sallies - #14 Yellow - Perlodidae
Baetis - Not many think of Baetis in the Summer - Key bug at times!
Summer Stones - Just around the corner

Water levels raised quite a bit in the last week.  All things considered, pretty dang good fishing!

Good fishing in the PM and AM shadows with #10-12 dry flies....Don't be afraid to give the bigger dry flies a bit of a twitch

KLICKITAT RIVER REPORT - 6/24/16

Some are saying this is the best June on the Klickitat in a long time.  We haven't been on it much.  But we will be soon :))  We have been very busy on the Upper Columbia and the Yakima.  The clarity of the river went by the wayside today due to MEGA rain up on the mountain...  We will keep you updated.

UPPER COLUMBIA / KETTLE RIVER REPORT - 6/24/16

Upper Columbia
Fishing has improved from the last report. Green Drakes, Yellow Drakes, PMD's and Caddis are the main fare.  Water is lower  than normal. Water temps are at 58 degrees;  which is great!

Kettle River
Water is in great condition.   Levels have held based on the cool June.  Water temps are at 58 degrees as well. Bugs include PMD's, Yellow Sallies, Caddis, Grey Drakes.

Yellow Drake

Unbelievable wild trout on the dry fly for Karen

Bill with a classic Kettle Bow

YAKIMA & UPPER COLUMBIA RIVER REPORT - 6/18/16

Little rough on the Upper Columbia  lately - Not sure what is going on.  Still have the same bugs from the last report; They just don't seem to be eating frequently for us.
Upper Columbia

On the other hand,  The Yakima has been goood fishing.  Water is lower than normal so don't get caught just fishing banks.  There are good numbers of fish on mid river drops etc....

PMD's have been the predominant fare as of recently...As well as some Caddis.  Our Golden Stone's have been over for a little while now but it's cousin, the Summer Stonefly nymph is pretty active and the trout have been keying on them recently.  Our first Adult Summer Stones should appear around 3 weeks from now....The nymph is 'game on' now.

Adult Yakima River Summer Stone

The brown and the tan Pat's  shown on the left bar are a good choice.
Although there are other patterns that are effective.
